Corsets… we all dread them, but I guarantee you have at least one tucked away in your closet for safe keeping. If you think about it, corsets have been in the fashion game longer than any other accessory – outlasting generations and adapting over time. In the past, corsets were worn to hold and train the torso into a desired shape for aesthetic purposes. Over time we’ve modernized this garment to be used less as a means for functionality, and more as a fashion trend.
It seems as if the corset came back with a bang toward the end of 2016, with style icons such as Gigi Hadid repping the trend. What caught my eye was how she wore it… pairing it on top of a basic tee or oversized button-down. I wanted to hit this streets with this so bad, but at the time I only had a silver glittered corset I had bought for a burlesque party. The one I’m wearing in this look I honestly bought from a Halloween store in the French Quarter! What I liked most was the leather and buckle detailing that hid a zipper so I could easily get in and out of that bad boy.
Corsets are great for someone who wants to accentuate their shape. I’m built a little more on the narrow side, so what would normally be an ill-fitting, baggy ensemble now has curve-appeal. You can really wear a corset so many different ways – over a loose-fitting dress or even your boyfriend’s oxford – and they come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re not ready to dive into this trend head first, start out with a corset belt. I’ve included a few below that I thought were super cool, and would look great over an oversized garment currently hanging in your closet 🙂
